Update after police called to Co-op Bank at Bristol's Christmas Market

Police have shared more information about why they descended on Bristol Christmas Market yesterday (December 17).

Avon and Somerset Constabulary were called to The Cooperative bank, on Broadmead at around 5pm.

Yesterday, a police spokesperson said the force was looking into a case of potential fraud, but today officers have confirmed no offences took place.

A spokesperson said: "Police attended Britannia Building Society in Broadmead just before 5pm Tuesday 17 December.

"The officers were responding to concerns raised by staff after an elderly man came in to withdraw a large amount of money.

"He was accompanied by a younger man who branch staff said would not let the older man be spoken to alone.

"On officers' arrival staff were able to speak to the customer privately and authorise the withdrawal.

"Officers are grateful to branch staff for being alert to signs of a potential fraud and reporting the incident, however thankfully in this case there were no offences."

A spokesperson for the bank said yesterday: "I can not comment on any police incident but helping to prevent to fraud is absolute paramount to us."
