Update after fire at university site which led to huge emergency service presence

A fire at the University of Withywood site was accidental, a fire service investigation has found.

The building's roof caught fire on the afternoon of June 9, causing police to close the road as at least four fire engines attended.

The University of Withywood is a bungalow which for many years was used by legendary local figure Anton Bantock to educate the community.

An Avon Fire and Rescue service spokeswoman said: “Crews from Bedminster, Southmead, Temple and Weston fire stations attended a fire on Queens Road in Bishopsworth.

"A fire investigation was carried out, and the incident was deemed accidental."

Firefighters used two high-pressure hose reels, a 45mm jet and turntable ladder to tackle the blaze, which was extinguished at 2.25pm on June 9.

Our photographer said the roof of the bungalow suffered significant damage from the fire.

Though the site is now just a home, it is still known as the University of Withywood due to its history as a place of free education, open to all.

After retiring as a teacher in the 1980s, Anton Bantock converted the bungalow into an open house and used it to hold lectures.

Bantock, who dedicated his life to helping people from deprived backgrounds, was awarded an MBE for his community work.

He died aged 83, in 2015, but his name was immortalised in 2017, when a new road in Withywood was named in his honour.

A musical based on Bantock's life is in the works. Devised by Andrew Lawrence, the local production is called University of Withwood: The Musical.
