Upcoming Live-Action Disney Remake Movies

Maui smiling.

For decades now, there have been a lot of great Disney live-action remakes like The Lion King, Cinderella, The Jungle Book, and more than a dozen other reinterpretations of the studio’s animated classics, and that trend doesn’t look to be slowing down anytime soon. In fact, it appears as if Disney is doubling down on the practice with some of its all-time greats and modern gems getting the live-action treatment in the coming months and years.

We already have a full rundown of all the upcoming Disney movies, which includes everything from all those soon-to-be-released Marvel films to Pixar’s in-the-works projects, and much more, but there’s no such thing as too much Disney. That being said, here are the upcoming live-action Disney remakes we can expect to see soon.

Moana - July 10, 2026

The long-awaited Moana live-action adaptation will be here in a little less than a year, and it’s easy to see why everyone is getting so excited about this one. Though not a ton of details have been announced at this point, the movie appears to be a full-on remake of the musical that gave us hits like “How Far I’ll Go” and “You’re Welcome,” which will be great to see.

Dwayne Johnson, who provided the voice of Maui in the 2016 original, announced in April 2023 that his production company, Seven Bucks Productions, was in the process of bringing the project to life and that he would once again be showing up as Maui. And while Auli'i Cravalho won’t be returning to play Moana in the remake, Catherine Laga'aia will be taking up the title role when this lands in theaters on July 10, 2026.

Lilo & Stitch 2 - TBD

When Lilo & Stitch took the world by storm at the beginning of Summer 2025, a sequel to the live-action adaptation was pretty much a given. Well, that good news came in June 2025 when it was announced that Lilo & Stitch is already in development. The Disney X account revealed the news in the cutest way possible with a short video of Stitch driving a car across Walt Disney Studios’ backlots, causing all kinds of mayhem in the process.

Though it’s likely we’ll see the rest of the live-action cast join the adorable and destructive alien when the movie arrives at some point in the future, not a lot has been said about the actors, the story, or even a potential release window.

Maleficent 3 - TBD

It has been over a half-decade since Angelina Jolie last played the legendary Disney character, Maleficent on the big screen, but it doesn’t look like we’ve seen the last of the often misunderstood villain.

In March 2025, when Deadline was breaking down a new Winnie the Pooh series, the outlet reported that writer Linda Woolverton, who previously worked on Maleficent and The Lion King, was penning a script for Maleficent 3. There haven’t been any additional details since then.

Disney Live-Action Remakes With Unknown Statuses

While some upcoming Disney live-action remakes seem to be getting updates on a near-monthly basis, other projects long ago are a little less active. Here are all the announced projects with unknown statuses.

Cruella 2

Two-time Oscar winner Emma Stone helped breathe new life into the 101 Dalmatians villain with the 2021 live-action prequel, Cruella, and fans have been clamoring for a sequel ever since. Well, the world may be waiting a bit longer than expected for Cruella 2, as Stone has revealed that it is still a work in progress. When speaking with Variety at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in May 2024, the Poor Things star said the shooting would begin “hopefully sooner rather than later.”

She didn’t offer any details about the planned sequel or where the franchise is going, but hopefully, we’ll know more about this live-action project “sooner rather than later,” as Stone put it.

Live-Action Hercules

Though it won’t be a direct remake of the 1997 animated movie of the same name, there has been talk of a live-action Hercules movie for a few years now. First announced back in 2022, the project will reportedly be directed by Guy Ritchie, but there has been speculation over the years that the Snatch and Sherlock Holmes filmmaker was no longer attached to the project, per Screen Rant.

At this time, we don’t know much about the movie’s cast, plot, or even when it will be released, the Russo Brothers told Total Film (via GamesRadar) in May 2024 that they were still waiting on a script for the long-in-the-works project. The only news regarding the project since then has been about wild rumors that may or may not pan out.

Live-Action Bambi

The 1942 animated classic, Bambi, is another beloved Disney project that has supposedly been getting the live-action treatment for years. The project, which was first announced back in early 2020, is being co-written by Captain Marvel scribe Geneva Robertson-Dworet and Lindsay Beer, who wrote the 2020 Tom Holland sci-fi adventure film, Chaos Walking.

Outside of Sarah Polley announcing in March 2024 that she was no longer planning to direct the movie, per The Wrap, there haven’t been any major updates on the project in the past few years, but be on the lookout in the future.

Live-Action Robin Hood - TBD

In April 2020, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that there was a live-action remake of the 1973 animated film, Robin Hood, in the works as a Disney+ exclusive. The project, which is set to be helmed by Blindspotting director Carlos Lopez Estrada and written by Lady and the Tramp scribe Kari Granlund, will reportedly be a musical and feature a combination of live-action and CGI similar to 2019's The Lion King.

However, there haven’t been any substantial updates in a few years.

Live-Action The Hunchback Of Notre Dame - TBD

The Hunchback of Notre Dame, the 1996 adaptation of Victor Hugo’s classic novel, will be getting a remake of its own at some point, only this time it will be a live-action spectacle. First announced back in 2019, the movie hasn’t had a whole lot of progress since then, but Josh Gad did share with his Instagram followers in March 2023 that the film’s script was “one of the best” he has ever read. Besides that, and a fake poster with several A-listers attached, we’re still in the dark about this long-in-the-works project.

Disney Live-Action Remakes No Longer Happening

While many Disney live-action remakes have hit the big screen (or at least Disney+), others will never get a big premiere as they’ve been cancelled before even getting off the ground.

Live-Action Tangled

In the fallout from Snow White’s box office troubles (and all the bad buzz surrounding it prior to its March 2025 release), Disney pressed pause on the long-in-the-works Tangled live-action adaptation. In April 2025, The Hollywood Reporter cited studio insiders when it reported that the project helmed by The Greatest Showman’s Michael Gracey was being put on the sidelines. Though no word was given as to if or when development will pick back up, there have been no updates since the news first broke.

Live-Action The Aristocats

Back in early 2022 when Disney was working on all kinds of live-action remakes or adaptations, it was announced that The Aristocats was going to be joining the ranks. There was a lot of hype surrounding the project, especially when Oscar winner and Roots drummer Questlove was tapped to direct the musical about singing cats. However, the project lost all its momentum over the past few years, and in August 2025, Questlove told Score: The Podcast that the movie was no longer happening.
