Up to 40 jobs could be created as plans for new Lidl store in Gateshead get green light

Plans to open a new supermarket in Gateshead have been given the go-ahead, weeks after councillors delayed their decision.

Lidl was given permission at Wednesday's planning committee meeting to open a new supermarket in the Co-op Store on Parsons Drive in Ryton.

And the supermarket's bosses say up to 40 new jobs could be created.

This comes after a meeting in March where Gateshead Council's planning committee delayed making a decision on the scheme, with councillors saying they needed to be sure it wouldn't harm the community.

Speaking against the scheme at the time, ward councillor Chris Buckley said it would take jobs away from elderly and disabled people and cause noise nuisance.

Residents were also unhappy with the proposals, and sent 63 letters of objection to the council.

They raised concerns about noise, anti-social behaviour, delivery hours and flooding.

The council's planning department once again recommended for the plans to be approved as long as the store complies with a range of conditions.

These include not taking deliveries before 7am or after 10pm Monday to Saturday or before 8am or after 8pm on Sunday.

And this time round the committee agreed, and voted to approve the plans.

A planning document previously submitted to the council said the new store would create 40 jobs.

It said: "The proposed Lidl store would employ up to 40 staff in store. Lidl has a policy of employing local people from all backgrounds to work in their stores.

"This allows for a short commute to work and for staff to potentially work at short notice."

The statement also said that during deliveries, it is company policy that vehicle engines are switched off to reduce noise and disturbance.
