Up to about 300 people a day broke novel coronavirus quarantine requirements in April after entering Japan, according to the government.

The government said Wednesday at a meeting of entities including the Liberal Democratic Party's Foreign Affairs Division that some people entering Japan from other countries failed to report their whereabouts to a public health center or left their voluntary isolation locations without permission.

The government requires all people returning to Japan to voluntarily self-quarantine at home or in hotels for 14 days and to report their health condition and their locations.

According to the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, about 24,000 returnees are in their voluntary quarantine period on an average day.

As of the beginning of May, about 50 to 100 people per day were still not complying with such requirements, with some failing to report to public health centers, the government said.

The LDP Foreign Affairs Division has called on the government to strengthen measures such as by monitoring whereabouts of returnees.

At the meeting, division chairman Masahisa Sato demanded that the government step up its response.
