Up to 150 kids left in limbo after HSE failed to hire new specialist doctor for Cork University hospital

Up to 150 children have been left without gastro care in Cork University Hospital (CUH) after the HSE failed to replace a doctor.

Last week CUH sent out letters to parents to say their appointments for May and June have
been cancelled.

Dr Elena Rubio Garcia handed in her notice in January but has not been replaced.

Speaking on The 96fm Opinion Line with PJ Coogan, one mum Claire told how she found out about the cancellation.

She said: “My nine-year-old daughter was attending Rubio last year and she was in CUH for coeliac disease and underlying problems with her stomach.

Number of measles cases in Ireland soar by terrifying 200%

“She was due her appointment in June and I had to go in last week to get blood tests for that.

“So I took her in to get her blood tests on Tuesday and then on Thursday I was told her appointment for June had been cancelled until further notice.

“The system they have in there is very good, she was getting excellent care.

“The earliest private appointment I can get is in June and we are in limbo.”

The Irish Mirror have contacted the HSE and CUH for comment.
