Up to 15 inches of snow to fall with 50mph gusts as Met Office warns of Arctic air mass

Snow and rain fell to make it slippy for the prize pets as they made their way to the NEC Birmingham for the opening day of the prestigious dog show.

Blizzards are set to cause ­treacherous conditions tomorrow with 50mph gusts and up to 15in of snow forecast in some areas.

The Met Office has issued amber warnings in northern England, the Midlands, North Wales and Northern Ireland.

There is likely to be “significant disruption” to transport and power supplies. Yellow warnings for snow cover much of the rest of the UK.

Snow and ice caused travel disruption in vast parts of the nation today after the coldest March temperature in a decade was recorded overnight (-16C in Altnaharra in the Highlands).

The RAC said there were 50% more breakdowns than usual in areas affected by snow this morning, with some drivers stuck in the white stuff in parts of South Yorkshire and Wales.

Spokesman Rod Dennis said: “Given the weather, we recommend thinking carefully before setting out.

"With more snow forecast, things are likely to get worse on the roads before they get better.”

East Midlands Airport, near Castle Donington, Leics, closed its runway due to the weather.

Flooding alerts were issued for parts of Wales and England.

The Met Office said an Arctic air mass meeting mild air from the south is causing turbulent weather.
