Up to 100 people evacuated as fire crew rush to Irvine supermarket

An Irvine supermarket was evacuated this afternoon as a fire alarm raised.

Asda at the Rivergate Shopping Centre was emptied as emergency services rushed to the scene.

It turned out to be a false alarm, but an eyewitness reckons there was up to 100 people stranded outside.

The eyewitness said: "Everyone was evacuated and they were all stuck outside.

"There was customers and staff all outside, they were all eager to get back in as it was starting to rain.

"It was very busy, there was probably about 80 or 100 people standing there."

One fire engine and one police car were on the scene, but have now left.

A spokesman for Scottish Fire and Rescue confirmed it was a false alarm and their crew have left the area.
