LUCKNOW: After the first two phases of polling failed to square up to 2017 turnouts, the third phase finally registered a 0.08% jump over the voting percentage clocked five years ago.
Constituencies like Mehroni and Babina recorded bumper turnouts, surpassing 70%, while high-profile Karhal constituency created history with second-highest polling percentage since 1951.
On Sunday, 59 constituencies straddling 16 districts of three regions — West UP, Kanpur and Bundelkhand — registered 62.28% polling as compared to 62.21% in 2017.
The spurt in turnout was recorded in districts like Mainpuri, which registered 63.3% compared to 59.63% in 2017. Similarly, Etah district recorded 65.62% against a previous of 64.61%, Etawah district 61.7% against 60% and Hamirpur witnessed a turnout of 64.02% against 63.35% in 2017. Districts like Kanpur Nagar, Hathras and Auariya saw an increase in polling percentage as high as 0.09%. Kanpur Nagar, which saw 57.26% turnout in 2017, clocked a 0.09% rise with a turnout of 57.35% this time. Similarly, Hathras recorded 0.19% rise with a turnout of 63.22% against 63.03% five years ago. Auraiya registered 60.98% as compared to 60.37% in 2017, clocking a 0.61% rise.
There were total of nine districts that registered a dip in polling percentage as compared to previous assembly elections. The highest drop in turnout was registered in Firozabad with the district recording a 1.67 dip (64.40% turnout). This was followed by Mahoba, which recorded 1.46% fall and 64.53% turnout. Similarly, Kannauj recorded 1.23% drop and registered 62.09% polling. Jalaun recorded 59.25% turnout and the district witnessed a 1.15% dip.
Districts like Kanpur Dehat clocked a turnout of 62.4%, which was 0.18% lower than the previous 62.58%. Farrukhabad recorded a 0.2% fall with 59.57% voters turning up to vote. Kasganj recorded 62.34% voting with a 0.32% dip, Jhansi 65.61% with a 0.41% drop and Lalitpur district which recorded highest polling percentage among all 16 districts with 71.27%, clocking a 0.74% drop in turnout.
