Up For Review dies at Grand National: How many horses died at Aintree in 2019?

Up For Review has died at the Grand National after falling at the first fence.

The horrific fall was captured by TV cameras, with the horse, who was trained by Willie Mullins, looking visibly distressed after the early incident.

Another horse, General Principle, was taken to a horse ambulance following the race suffering with a cut.

Vintage Clouds also fell at the first, while Monbeg Notorious and Minella Rocco were pulled up, and Jury Duty and Pleasant Company unseated their riders.

Two horses were also killed on Friday of this year's three-day Aintree meeting.

The first horse to suffer a fatal accident was Crucial Role, ridden by Harry Skelton, who fell during the Betway Mildmay Novices.

Later on the same day, Forest Des Aigles suffered an injury before jumping the second-last fence in the Randox Health Topham Handicap Chase. Both horses were put down.

Throughout the Grand National's history 84 horses have now died taking on the Aintree course. The vast majority of these deaths occurred before 2000 with 13 deaths since the turn of the millenium.

There had been no deaths since 2012 in the main Grand National race. Last year, one horse, Lilbitluso, died during the Aintree festival.
