UP: EC crackdown erases pol graffiti from 58,000 walls

LUCKNOW: Launching a massive drive after enforcing the model code of conduct, the Election Commission got as many as 58,000 political graffiti removed from government and private properties.

According to chief electoral officer (CEO) Ajay Kumar Shukla, 38,891 walls writings were removed from government properties while 19,615 graffiti on private properties were removed.

“Over 9.6 lakh publicity material were collected from government and private properties across the state. Out of the total material which included wall writings, posters and banners, 7.32 lakh were removed from government establishments while 2.28 lakh were removed from private properties,” he said.

“At least 3.42 lakh posters, 2.3 lakh banners and 1.19 other kinds of publicity material were removed from government properties. Similarly, 1.14 lakh posters, 58,769 banners and 35,224 other publicity items were removed from private properties,” he added.

“To ensure peaceful polling, police got 10,007 arms licences deposited, nine licences confiscated and four licences cancelled,” the CEO said.

As part of preventive action under the IPC and CrPc, 28,474 people were arrested and non-bailable warrants (NBWs) were issued against 335 others.

“Excise department teams have seized 6,588 litres of liquor worth over Rs 15.58 lakh across the state,” the CEO added.
