LUCKNOW: Amid reports of violence during nomination for block chairman elections, the BJP on Thursday claimed to be tipped to get 292 out of 825 supported candidates elected unopposed. Friday happens to be the last day of taking back nomination when the state election commission will announce the number of candidates being elected unopposed. Polling for the block chairman elections will be held on Saturday.
In a statement, the BJP claimed that the opposition could neither find candidates nor proposers in many seats. Though not held on a party symbol, the block chairman elections, like in case of Zila Panchayat chairman elections, had attained political frenzy with the BJP and SP crossing swords amid BSP walking out of the electoral contest. The Congress too largely remained away from the contest on many seats.
“There are adequate signs that the BJP will be able to make a record in block chairman elections as well,” the party said in a statement. The BJP backed candidates will now face a direct contest with the SP on Saturday, in what could further stoke a slugfest between the ruling party and the principal opposition in UP.
The BJP has been drumming up its victory of party backed candidates on 66 out of 75 Zila Panchayat chairman seats, in what was seen as a saffron party bid to scale up its rural presence which determine electoral prospects of any political party. “People have chosen to go with the public welfare policies with the Yogi Adityanath government,” a party spokesperson said.
