Unwanted Panther Laurie lifts lid on NRL future

Off-contract Penrith fullback Daine Laurie claims he has more to give in the NRL, insisting he is a more-rounded player to the one who left the Panthers for Wests Tigers in 2020.

Laurie has been listed among the reserves for Sunday's semi-final with Canterbury but has proven his value as a back-up player to Penrith's NSW State of Origin fullback Dylan Edwards over the last two seasons.

The 26-year-old Laurie played 14 games in 2024 - his first year back at Penrith - and has chalked up nine appearances this year as a replacement for Edwards or as a utility.

But still without a deal for next season, Laurie is keen to stress how his second coming at Penrith has set him up for the future.

"I don't have a clue (what my future holds) ... I'm just going to take it day by day and hopefully something turns up in the background," Laurie told AAP.

"I reckon I've matured as a person and I reckon my game has definitely gotten better since I left the Tigers.

"It was a challenge for myself to go over there and try and test myself playing week in week out first grade.

"I've obviously learned heaps off Dyl. He's a champion fullback and I've looked up to him since I came down here as a 16-year-old.

"He's the one I've tried to model my game off and he's been a great mentor."

With his management busy scouring the market, the fullback is open to anything.

But Laurie, who has made 75 appearances in the NRL, has made it clear he doesn't want to move overseas until he's brought up a ton.

"I think I'm too young to go over there, I want to get to the 100-game mark and then maybe suss it out," he said.

"I'm just coming in and taking it day by day and if something pops up that's the right thing for me and my missus, I'll take it."
