Unwanted Japan SDF equipment will be up for auction for 1st time

Defense Minister Taro Kono announced that, for the first time, the Self-Defense Force's unwanted equipment will be auctioned off, at a press conference on Friday.

The auction will take place on July 26 at the Defense Ministry in Ichigaya, Tokyo.

About 30 items will be on display, including the steering wheel of the JDS Yamayuki, which is the former training vessel that was decommissioned in March, an Air SDF pilot's helmet and a control rod of a prototype C-1 transport plane.

Kono said he was asked by Finance Minister Taro Aso to secure income, and jokingly said, "I want to earn about the same as one F-35[A]," citing a cutting-edge stealth fighter that costs about 10 billion yen.

Kono is also considering holding an online auction. Details, including how to participate, can be found on the Acquisition, Technology and Logistics Agency's (ATLA) website.
