Unvaccinated NHS staff should not see patients, Mirror readers say in new survey

NHS staff who refuse to have the Covid vaccine should be stopped from seeing patients, according to a survey of 2,181 Mirror readers on our website.

The vaccine is already being made a "condition of deployment" for care home staff in England, and the government is looking at whether to do the same for NHS frontline workers.

Last week, Professor Calum Semple, who sits on the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE) said frontline workers and medics should be required to get jabbed as part of their contract.

His announcement follows a new study showing that more than one in 10 patients in the UK were infected with Covid-19 during the first wave while receiving hospital treatment for another reason.

"I do passionately believe that people working in health and social care should be vaccinated as part of their contract of employment..." Prof Semple said.

"I may be an outlier on this but I do see the effects on the frontline of hospital transmission and the devastating effect it has on patients that are immune-compromised, those with leukaemia, cancers, extreme susceptibilities...

"I think we need to give our healthcare workers and social care workers time to consider this but if uptake remains poor I think it will become mandated."

According to a survey conducted by The Mirror on our website, a staggering 75 percent of 2,181 respondents agree that NHS staff who refuse the vaccine should be stopped from treating patients.

A fair 24 percent (515 readers) disagreed with the statement, while only 1 percent (31 readers) said they were unsure.

However, opinions seemed more divided in the comments section, with one user saying: "Of course they can't see patients. You work for NHS to safe lives not to get ride of them."

While another added: "It should be a personal choice. 44,000 care workers are leaving and thousands more are being forced to have it with threats and intimidation. This regulation was rushed through without consultation or debate just before they all went on break."

"Definitely not! it's a personal choice," commented user Kikam.

"Vaccination should be compulsory for all health workers!" argued another "No vax no job!"
