She’s gonna be bored.
A gold-medalist snowboarder has decided to quarantine for three weeks in Beijing instead of getting a COVID-19 vaccine ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics.
Patrizia Kummer of Switzerland has not been vaccinated for “personal reasons,” according to a Tuesday statement from Switzerland’s ski federation.
“After my personal decision not to be vaccinated, quarantine is the logical consequence,” Kummer said “I respect the regulations of the authorities and the (International Olympic Committee).”
Kummer won gold in the parallel giant slalom at Sochi 2014. She finished 16th in the same event four years later in Pyeongchang. Kummer has not been officially named to Switzerland’s Olympic skiing team, but she likely will be.
China is requiring all unvaccinated athletes to quarantine upon arrival in the country as part of its strict anti-COVID-19 measures. U.S. Olympians are bound by a vaccine mandate, which the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced in September. The Olympics begin Feb. 4.
