Unvaccinated Brit who was "100% sure" he would die is still undecided about jab

An unvaccinated coronavirus patient who fell severely ill still isn't sure if he will get the jab even after the virus left him fighting for life.

Allan, who is relying on an oxygen machine to breathe, was so poorly that he thought "100 per cent" he would die as medics battled to keep him alive.

The 38-year-old said he had delayed getting a Covid-19 vaccine because he “was investigating and considering", and he still hasn't decided if he will book a jab.

Speaking from his hospital bed with an oxygen mask on his face, Allan told ITV News he does not regret not getting the jab even as his condition remains touch and go.

It comes after he spent a week on a high dependency unit at Northwick Park Hospital in Harrow, north-west London.

For 10 days he was on continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), which is used to treat coronavirus patients who have acute respiratory failure.

Allan, one of almost 80 Covid patients at the hospital, said: “The worse moment was thinking am I going to push through because the breathing became difficult, when you’re struggling to breath, that’s worrying, very worrying.”

He said he didn't get his jab because he was still "considering" it.

Allan added: “What I would say to people is do your investigations and do what you’re comfortable with."

He said he was "possibly" a good example for getting the vaccine, adding: "I’m here, telling the story, I’m just staying positive, trying to get better and do the right thing."

Northwick Park Hospital said it has seen a rise in the number of younger and unvaccinated Covid patients.

New figures from the NHS show about 30 per cent of young adults in England have still not had a first dose of vaccine.

About 2.6 million 18 to 29-year-olds remain unvaccinated, with take-up lower among men than women.

All adults in England have been able to book a first dose of vaccine since June 17.

In recent days, a number of unvaccinated people who ended up in hospital with severe cases of Covid have said they regret not getting the jab and urged others to get theirs.

The heartbroken mum of a 34-year-old vaccine sceptic who thought he was "invincible" - but died just weeks after catching the virus - was aong those who urged people to get the jab.

It came as a new study showed Brits who have been double jabbed are three times less likely to catch coronavirus than those who are unvaccinated.
