'Unusually high' UV levels predicted for Nottingham

Forecasters are predicting 'very high' UV levels across Nottingham as temperatures are expected to peak at 30C.

A UV level of 8 is predicted at around 1pm on Thursday, June 25.

The UV index forecast identifies the strength of the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun.

According to the MET Office, the UV index does not exceed 8 in the UK, and a recording of 8 is rare.

The MET Office says "7 may occur on exceptional days, mostly in the two weeks towards the end of June). Indices of 9 and 10 are common in the Mediterranean area".

The spokesman added: "The strength of UV varies depending on where you are in the world, the time of year and on a number of different weather factors such as the amount of cloud cover. Small amounts of UV exposure can be beneficial as it is essential in the production of vitamin D, however over exposure of UV can lead to serious health issues.

"The aim of the index is to warn people of increased risk and encourage them change their behaviour in order to protect themselves against the risks of skin cancer and skin damage."

The UV Level is expected to be around 6, which is described as being high by the MET Office, at 11am, rising to 7 at midday and 8 at 1pm. The level is then expected to steadily decrease to 5 - which is described as moderate on the UV index - by 4pm.

Temperatures across Nottingham are expected to peak at 30C between 4pm and 6pm.
