The University of New South Wales has announced that it will cut 493 full time jobs next year.
The university will also consolidate its eight faculties to six and will remove two deans and two vice presidents from the senior leadership team.
This is a response to a budget shortfall of $370 million due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, the cuts will not affect the UNSW Canberra campus at the Australian Defence Force Academy.
A spokesperson from UNSW Canberra said that "UNSW Canberra is a discrete campus with distinctive priorities and was not included within the scope of UNSW Sydney's Taskforce 2020/21+."
National Tertiary Education Union Branch President Dr Sarah Gregson said she also also been told by Vice Chancellor Professor Ian Jacobs the cuts would not affect staff in Canberra.
She also said UNSW Canberra had more stability due to its contract with defence and its plans for a second campus in the capital.
UNSW Canberra received the green light from the ACT Government in July to build a new campus in Reid. The UNSW branch of the NTEU will meet to consider campaign options next week.
