Former Cardinals safety Tre Boston a free agent by choice

Tre Boston had a solid season in 2018 with the Arizona Cardinals. He signed with them very late in the offseason. In part, he never was offered what he was seeking, which was top safety money.

Some Cardinals fans hoped that the team would bring him back. However, with the acquisition of D.J. Swearinger via waivers in December and a change in the defensive scheme to play only two safeties, Boston was not needed. In fact, the Cardinals even cut Antoine Bethea.

Boston remains unsigned. According to Adam Fisher of the Fort Myers News-Press, Boston still is a free agent by choice.

Boston told him he turned down “many, many” contract offers this offseason because they weren’t what he feels he deserves.

“It’s all about knowing your worth,” Boston said. “I know I’m going to go out (this season) and do something I did last year – play well with the opportunity I’m given.”

He played last season on a one-year, $1.5 million contract. He signed the day before training camp and finished the season with three interceptions and 79 tackles for the league’s worst team.

While he may ultimately get less money than he has already been offered, but at least he is taking advantage of the time off. He didn’t have to participate in any offseason programs just like last year. He still went out and played well.

If ultimately he will not get the money he wants, he can at least find the best situation for him and maximize his time off in the offseason.
