'Unresponsive' man taken to the RVI after having medical episode on Shields Road

A man has been taken to hospital after having a medical episode in Byker.

Emergency services were called to Shields Road on Wednesday morning after reports were made of an "unresponsive" man on the street.

The man was later taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle but his condition is not known.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said: "At about 11.19am today (Wednesday) we received a call for assistance in Shields Road, Byker.

"Officers attended where emergency services were assisting an unresponsive male. The male was later taken to hospital."

A spokeswoman for the North East Ambulance Service added: "We sent a specialist response paramedic and a double crewed ambulance and we transported one patient to the RVI."

Firefighters from Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service's Blue Watch were on their way back to the Byker station when they saw the incident unfolding.

A TWFRS spokesperson said: "The crew notified our control room that they were stopping to help. They realised the man had no vital signs so administered CPR and the defibrillator shock pads to try to bring him round.

"After two attempts he fortunately began to regain consciousness, before paramedics arrived."

Police have confirmed that there are no suspicious circumstances.
