'Unpredictable' tactic to catch knife carrying thugs revealed

Knife arches have been installed in train stations across Wirral in a bid to take deadly weapons off the streets.

The arches appear to have been installed today and is part of a joint operation between the British Transport Police, Merseyrail and Merseyside Police.

Exactly where all of these arches are located has not been revealed by the force, although BTP Merseyside tweeted to say there was an arch outside of New Brighton station.

The arches, regularly used by BTP across the country, are vital in identifying potentially deadly weapons

Posting on Facebook, Wirral Police shared an image of one of the arches in use and said: "Today local policing teams from the Wirral, British Transport Police and Revenue Protection Officers from Merseyrail are targeting persons who may be using the transport system to commit crimes in our communities."

A spokeswoman for the British Transport Police said details about how long these arches could be in place for could not be disclosed at this stage.

The spokeswoman told the ECHO: "We regularly deploy knife arches across the railway network.

"This photo forms part of Op Spectre, a week long national intensification week to deter violent crime.

"We would not provide details of where the arches are located or how many I’m afraid as the deployments are designed to be unpredictable."
