Unpaid work for benefits cheat

A carer who claimed too much money from her government allowance has ended up in court.

Diane Kelly, 56, of Morton Road, Ayr, appeared at the town’s sheriff court on Tuesday, December 10.

She admitted claiming £6,500 carers allowance to which she was not entitled to from the Department of Work and Pensions.

The offence took place between February 16, 2015, and January 13, 2019, both dates inclusive, at her home in Morton Road.

It was revealed that Kelly had earnings which were in excess of the permissible amount from the DWP.

It is said she failed to notify the DWP of a change to her circumstances.

Defence solicitor John Gallagher said: “What’s quite clear is that she was, and remains, the full-time carer for her father.”

Sheriff Desmond Leslie sentenced Kelly to 150 hours of unpaid work in the community to be completed within the next 12 months.
