Unpaid Scots carers invited to register for coronavirus vaccine now - how to check if you're eligible

Unpaid carers in Scotland are being urged to take up an invitation for the coronavirus vaccine.

NHS Scotland is in the process of offering the jab to people who provide vital face-to-face care and support for their loved ones.

It is estimated that 700,00 people in Scotland care for a friend, family or neighbour affected by a disability, physical or mental health, frailty or substance misuse.

Care can range from doing the shopping and preparing meals to giving personal and practical support.

Anyone over the age of 16 who fits this description can now come forward to request the vaccine if they have not already been offered it.

A spokesperson for NHS Scotland said: “By getting the vaccine, those caring for others can protect themselves from the virus, while continuing to look after and protect others.”

Am I eligible for the coronavirus vaccine?

Scots will be able to apply for the jab if all of the following apply to them:

  • You are aged 16 to 64-years-old
  • You provide face-to-face care and support to one or more family members, friends or neighbours
  • The care you provide is not part of a contract or voluntary work
  • If caring for someone under 18, they are affected by a disability, physical or mental ill-health, developmental condition or substance
  • You have not already received your first coronavirus vaccination

How do I register to the jab?

Scots who are eligible to receive the vaccine at this stage must have access to an email address or mobile phone to register.

They will also need to be registered with a GP or other NHS Scotland service.

Unpaid carers will be able to apply for the jab through the coronavirus vaccine registration service or by phoning the Covid-19 Vaccination Helpline on 0800 030 8013.

If you attempt to register and you receive a text message or an email saying you already have an appointment, then your appointment letter should be on the way to you.
