Unpaid carers wait months for coronavirus jab amid claims of system abuse in Scotland

Unpaid carers have been left waiting months for a Covid vaccine amid claims the system is being abused.

Some people looking after the vulnerable and ill have been told they will need to wait until June.

The Scottish Government opened up the vaccination programme to unpaid carers in March But the system – unlike in England – relies only on self-registration. There are fears people have been falsely claiming the status to get the jab.

Mark Morgan, 17, helps look after his aunt Catherine, 44, at the home they share in Greenock with his mum, Anne, 54. The Glasgow University student said: “My aunt has Down’s syndrome and other medical needs.

“She’s lived with us for the last 14 years and since my mum has returned to work I’ve been doing more to help. After I registered I was told I would be contacted in 72 hours but I didn’t hear anything.

“When I did speak with someone I was told I may have to wait until mid-June. It makes me angry to think people are falsely claiming they are unpaid carers just to get the vaccine.”
