Unpaid and unrecognised: The forgotten carers of the coronavirus pandemic

Leeds City Council must call on the government to provide more support for the unpaid carers who work round the clock to help vulnerable people.

That is the message from Councillor Jonathan Bentley, who will urge the council to demand "more recognition and support" for unpaid carers, when he speaks at a meeting on July 15.

The Liberal Democrat councillor says the government should increase the Carer's Allowance, raise the threshold at which payments are halted and offer carers free public transport.

Under the current rules, carers can claim a Carer's Allowance of £67.25 a week, if they earn less than £129 a week.

Cllr Bentley also says the government should be "protecting carers against discrimination at work similar to those facing racism, sexism and homophobia".

His white paper motion states: "This council recognises, with gratitude, the tremendous work being done by all key workers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

"Particular thanks go to the thousands of unpaid carers who have done so much to look after and protect vulnerable members of the community.

"The council calls on the government to give more recognition and support to unpaid carers."

It adds: "Additionally, the council asks that the government supports and allocates parliamentary time to the recently introduced Private Members Bill which would require employers to make reasonable adjustments for carers as they would for disabled staff, allowing people to combine caring and paid employment."

This white paper motion will be discussed by Leeds City Council at a meeting on July 15.
