Unopened iPhone from 2007 sells for nearly $40,000 in online auction

An iPhone from 2007 has sold for nearly $40,000 (£35,220) after going under the hammer at an online auction.

The unopened, factory-sealed device was originally sold for $599 (£527) when it appeared on the market in 2007, the first year the Apple smartphone was available. But the 8GB model finally went for $39,339.60 (£34,638) after a flurry of late activity with LCG Auctions.

Going into the final day of bidding, the top bid was $10,446. But some frantic action saw the price climb considerably before the online auction’s close.

The lot was described as follows by the auction site: “This factory sealed, first-release example is in exceptional condition. Virtually flawless along the surface and edges, the factory seal is clean with correct seam details and tightness.

“Labels on the reverse are correctly pristine beneath the seal. All original – no aftermarket stickers or UPC labels on this one. Brand new, never activated.”

The original iPhone was introduced by Steve Jobs at MacWorld San Francisco on January 9, 2007. The auctioned device, which was sold at retail on June 29 of that year, included a touchscreen, a two-megapixel camera and a web browser.

New iPhones also have considerably more space, with the smallest amount of storage currently at 32GB and maxing out at 1TB. The original iPhone came in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB models.
