Unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 has sold at auction for over £1 million

An unopened copy of Nintendo’s Super Mario 64 has sold at auction for over £1 million.

The iconic game still played to this day, was sold at the Heritage Auctions in Dallas, and broke its previous record for the sale of a single video game.

Collectible game grading company WataGames gave the copy in question an almost perfect score of 9.8 A++ - which is said to be higher than many other previous sealed copies sold.

It's unclear who bought the 1966 game from the US auction house which sold for $1.56 million, equivalent to £1.12 million.

Super Mario 64 was the best-selling game on the Nintendo 64 and first to feature Mario in 3D.

The sale follows a previous record-breaker which was an unopened copy of The Legend of Zelda cartridge for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) from 1988.

The record almost-doubled having sold just two days before for $870,000 or £744,000.

Valarie McLeckie, Heritage’s video game specialist, said they were shocked to see a game beat the Zelda record within just two days.
