'Unnatural' devil lips photo divides internet as people try to tell if it's real

It seems not a week goes by without a bizarre new beauty trend cropping up and this week is no exception.

A number of women are said to be trying out a cosmetic procedure known as 'devil lips' or 'octopus lips' and the whole thing looks rather scary.

The trend is believed to have started in Russia and sees people getting fillers injected into their lips to create a bumpy, wave across their mouth.

Photos of the devil lips have divided the internet, with some branding it "dangerous" and "unnatural" and others completely unconvinced that the procedure is even real.

Beauty expert and owner of Dermaspa, Nilam Holmes said the trend was one of the "worst" cosmetic procedures she had ever seen and could cause a person's lips to become distorted for years.

In an lengthy post on Instagram she warned her followers not to give it a go, writing: "This trend is WRONG on all levels...devil lips!? It looks unnatural and ridiculous.

"The clue is in the title really it is unnecessary disfigurement! Whether it is tattooing and/or filler, it looks terrible. I thought it was Photoshop and a joke for Halloween when I first saw it but apparently not.

"Please don’t be naive and follow silly trends like this. You will not be able to reverse it easily and go back to your natural lips if at all. Your lip border will be distorted and it won’t wear off evenly so you will have frilly lips for years to come."

She continued: "There are 20 more reasons I can think of. No one should encourage clients or teach this to practitioners and enable them to disfigure someone else's face deliberately.

"It’s not make up you can’t wipe it off. I have never even seen an MUA create devil shaped lips from make up unless it was perhaps for an editorial piece. I mean who would even be willing to try it?

"This is really one of the worst aesthetic/cosmetic procedures I've ever seen."

Woman has stark warning for people thinking about lip fillers

Cosmetic dental surgeon and facial aesthetician Dr Krystyna Wilczynski was also disturbed by the trend, but she wasn't sure the images were real.

She threw speculation at the trend, by stating that it isn't possible to "change the anatomical shape of the lips like this".

Speaking to the New York Post, she explained: "You can sharpen and contour by enhancing the vermilion border, but these devil lips are unnatural.

"Filler injected inappropriately could end up in a blood vessel, causing blockages and leading to necrosis (death) of the tissue. The vessels are around the lips, so using filler inappropriately is what can cause this."

However not everyone was totally against the look.

Some people commented on Instagram saying that they "wanted" to have it done as well, while others simply shared the fire emoji, suggesting they thought the look was hot.
