'Unlucky Liverpool!' - Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United fans react to Ligue 1 decision

Fans from Premier League clubs have been reacting to the news that the French Prime Minister, Édouard Philippe, has suspended football.

Reports earlier in the day suggested that the French government were to make it clear that no football will be played until August, signalling the end of the 2019/20 campaign.

And that's exactly what happened.

UEFA set deadline for the Premier League's planned return following coronavirus crisis

"The big sporting affairs cannot occur before September," Philippe told the press. "The 2019/20 football season cannot return."

Similar has happened across Europe in the Netherlands.

Last Friday the Dutch decided to end the 2019/20 Eredivisie season which has had a major effect on current league leaders Ajax.

Last season's Champions League semi-finalists lead the table on goal difference over AZ Alkmaar with nine league matches left to be played.

But they have been denied the Eredivisie title after it was confirmed there would be no 2019/20 league champions in the Netherlands.

If the Premier League were to take this approach then it would be terrible news for one club in particular.

Liverpool, who lead the Premier League by 25 points, are two wins away from clinching a first league title in three decades but a similar decision to that of the Netherlands and France would deny them a big celebration in controversial fashion.

With that said, some rival fans are not against that proposal.

Below is what's been said on Twitter by a selection of Arsenal, Chelsea and Man United supporters...

Meanwhile, FIFA’s medical chief Michel D'Hooghe believes football should not return until ‘the end of August or the beginning of September’.

“We are all subject to decisions at national level from the public authorities. It is very simple. Football suddenly becomes not the most important thing in life,” he told The Telegraph.

“I will be happy if we can start, in a convenient way, the next championship and have nothing before the start of next season.

“If they could start the season 2020-21 end of August or beginning of September I would be happy. Then they could eventually avoid a second attack from the virus, which is not impossible.

“Everyone has to be very careful for the moment. I have heard in many countries they are thinking about playing football again, with or without the public.

“In my long career I have seen many situations where there has been a balance between economic and health. Mostly the economics won, whether that was about jetlag or football at altitude or in extreme conditions such as pollution situations.

“If there is one circumstance where medical arguments should win against economical arguments, it is now. It is not a matter of money, it is a matter of life and death. It is very simple.”
