Unlicensed driver jumped out of car after 60mph police chase in Leeds

An unlicensed driver led police on a high-speed chase in Leeds before jumping out of the moving car.

Calvin Smith reached speeds of up to 60mph in a 30mph zone after being spotted driving in Belle Isle on May 7 this year.

Leeds Crown Court heard the pursuit ended when the 21-year-old exited the car and it collided into a parked vehicle.

David Mackay, prosecuting, said Smith forced his way through traffic on Belle Isle Road, narrowly avoiding a collision.

He hit the kerb and lost a wheel trim as he drove around Belle Isle Circus roundabout and back onto Belle Isle Road.

Smith and others jumped out of the vehicle outside shops on Middleton Road and the car collided with a parked car.

He was chased and arrested as he tried to jump over a fence.

Smith, of Wykebeck Avenue in Leeds, pleaded guilty to dangerous driving, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.

He has no previous convictions.

Stephen Welford, mitigating, said his unemployed client leads an unremarkable life living with his mother while she supports him.

Probation officer Mick Berry said Smith, who is one of nine siblings, has no academic qualifications and displays limited motivation.

Smith was sentenced to six months' imprisonment, suspended for 18 months, and disqualified from driving for two years.

He was also ordered to complete a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement and 200 hours of unpaid work.
