Unlicenced motorcyclist charged after alleged Belmont highway pursuit

A MOTORCYCLIST will face court next month after an alleged pursuit that began in Belmont in the early hours of Friday.

Lake Macquarie police were patrolling the Pacific Highway about 1.20am when they attempted to stop a Suzuki motorcycle.

It is alleged the bike was not displaying registration plates.

Police allege the motorcyclist failed to stop and a pursuit began before it was swiftly terminated over safety concerns.

The motorcycle was spotted stopped on the grass verge of the highway a short time later. Police said the rider ran off on foot after seeing police, who pursued and arrested him.

The 36-year-old man was taken to Belmont plice station and charged with police pursuit - not stop - drive at speed; not comply with direction given by police officer; licence expired less than 2 years before; failing to display number plates, using an unregistered vehicle on the road and using an uninsured motor vehicle on the road.

The man received conditional bail to face court on August 5.
