A white, spherical object was seen floating around Miyagi, Fukushima and Yamagata prefectures on Wednesday, with many witnesses reporting the object to prefecture police and meteorological observatories.
There were no aviation applications for balloons in that area the same day the object was reported, and the object remains unknown, according to the Sendai airport office of the Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism Ministry.
The unknown object looks to be a balloon, and there was a cross-shaped object tied beneath it. Sightings were reported in the northern part of Fukushima Prefecture, the central and southern parts of Miyagi Prefecture and the eastern part of Yamaga Prefecture.
The Miyagi Prefectural Police said they received about 30 calls to 110 from people who saw the balloon, beginning at around 5 a.m. and lasting until around 9 a.m. Staff from the Yamagata airport office located in Higashine, Yamagata Prefecture, saw the object floating around the southern skies at around 8:30 a.m.
"We are working to gather any information regarding this object, but we have no leads," said an official from the crisis prevention department of the Miyagi Prefectural Government.
