University students moved after fire safety issues discovered in halls of residence

The University of Nottingham said some students have been moved from their halls due to "a number of issues" relating to measures which stop fire spreading through a building.

One student who wished to remain anonymous told Nottinghamshire Live "this is the second time" they had been moved from accommodation on Jubilee Campus.

They said: "They have said they plan to still charge full rent, along with now mixing postgraduates with undergraduates and have refused to allow students the chance to leave their contracts voluntarily."

A University of Nottingham spokesperson said the students have been moved as the work required for the buildings would be disruptive.

Students in Southwell Hall will move to Newark Hall, both in Nottingham, in January 2021 for the rest of the academic year, while those in Melton Hall can opt to remain in the self-catered hall and move to a quieter part of the building, or move to Newark Hall with complimentary catering.

The University said accommodation students are moved into would match their previous room type.

In a statement, they said: "The University carries out regular checks on all of our buildings, including halls of residence, to ensure that they are safe for occupants. During a recent survey, a number of issues were identified in Melton and Southwell Halls. This relates to passive measures that stop the spread of fire through a building.

"The health and safety of students and staff is our priority and as soon as these issues were discovered, mitigation measures were put into place.

"Both the University and the fire service are satisfied that students can safely remain in the halls during the works. However, the works required will be noisy and disruptive and so we have taken the decision to temporarily move students into alternative accommodation until this is completed.

"We have been in touch with all students affected and are supporting them in advance of the move.

"We apologise for any inconvenience but many of our students are doing online lectures, seminars and timetabled events in their rooms due to the current Covid-related restrictions and these measures are necessary to ensure they have the quiet space needed to study, socialise and relax while the work takes place."
