University student 'urinated on' during 'violently condescending' rugby initiation

A first year student was urinated on during a "violently condescending" and "inexcusable", students have claimed.

Durham University has launched an investigation into its rugby club after the allegations came to light.

Just hours before the alleged incident took place, senior members of Durham University Rugby Football Club were reportedly told by a coach that they would be kicked out of the club if they bullied first years, Chronicle Live reported.

One student, who claims to have been at the event, looked to minimise the severity of the incident, claiming it was an "accident".

"It's just a social," they added.

"It's fine."

However, a member of the rugby club criticised the act, calling it "violently condescending" and "inexcusable".

They added: "It really makes you consider how much you want to be a part of the club.

"I'd be disappointed if the situation wasn't dealt with properly because it's embarrassing to be associated with that sort of behaviour and ultimately it's just not right."

Quentin Sloper, director of experience Durham which is responsible for coordinating the university's sport, condemned the alleged initiation.

He said: "We will not accept 'initiation ceremonies' of any sort.

"We have penalised and will penalise clubs that organise such activities.

"They are a direct breach of our code of conduct, which we use to ensure sports clubs and individuals are held accountable for their actions.

"We work hard to ensure clubs understand the importance of managing social occasions appropriately and respectfully.

"We are increasingly focussed on educating clubs about peer pressure, respect, choice, and the impact that such activities can have upon individuals, so as to prevent such events taking place."

A Durham University spokesperson said: "We are currently investigating an allegation and would not comment further while this investigation continues."
