University student to miss brother's wedding due to UK's cross border jab rules

A double-jabbed student is set to miss her brother's wedding after confusion over coronavirus rules between Scotland and England.

Giulia Calabrese had one of her Covid jabs in Scotland and the other in England and despite records indicating she has had both doses, the jab certificate from NHS Scotland only certifies its second dose, making her ineligible for the UK’s quarantine exemption.

Giulia, who attends St Andrews University studying for her PHD in neuroscience, can't now travel to an amber country without quarantining on her return.

Lib Dem MP Wendy Chamberlain is involved with three cases of students who’ve been unable to qualify for a quarantine exemption despite having had both jabs – first in England in May and their second in Scotland in June, the Daily Record reports.

Giulia, who wants to attend her brother's wedding at home in Italy, is one of them.

The 28-year-old said: “I’m very sad and disappointed I might have to miss my brother’s wedding.

"I’ve been very careful to ensure I got both vaccines and had all the paperwork ready.

“I can’t understand why the vaccination programmes in England and Scotland are struggling to match up people.”

Ms Chamberlain contacted NHS Scotland’s Covid-19 status helpline but was informed the matter was an issue for NHS Scotland and NHS England to address.

NHS England said a system is now in place to share vaccine data between Scotland and England but Giulia has still not been able to obtain a quarantine exemption.

The MP has written to Health Secretary Humza Yousaf to find a solution.

The Scottish Government said: “We‘ve a process for sharing data between England and Scotland.

"We’ll contact Ms Chamberlain to see if we can assist with these cases.”
