Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has recalled a message sent to staff and students encouraging them to "vote yes" in the upcoming same-sex marriage postal vote, claiming it was posted without proper approval.
QUT's mobile app sent a message out to its subscribers this morning with a reminder to ensure they were either on the electoral roll or check to see if their details were up to date.
"Every voice will count, show your support for LGBTIQ Australians and vote yes for same-sex marriage," the message said.
However a new message was sent hours later, advising that the original message should not have been issued.
"QUT wishes to advise that the content that was posted this morning concerning the proposed postal plebiscite on same-sex marriage was posted without appropriate approvals and has subsequently been immediately removed," it read.
A QUT spokeswoman said the message posted concerning the postal plebiscite was "the opinion of an individual and was not appropriate to have been posted through official QUT communication channels".
"The university acted quickly to retract the message once it had been issued.
"We would have taken the same action regarding the message had its contents aired opposing view."
