University of West of England student tests positive for coronavirus

A student at the University of the West of England has tested positive for coronavirus.

The student, based at the Frenchay Campus, was not symptomatic.

Public England South West and South Gloucestershire Council are now working with Public Health England to stem the spread of the virus.

Any individuals who have been in close contact with the student have been notified and advised to self isolate for 14 days.

Additional cleaning has been carried out at the areas of the campus visited by the individual concerned.

The university is continuing to follow the existing advice for non-clinical settings, including providing staff and students with guidance on social distancing and hygiene to limit spread.

Professor Steve West, Vice-Chancellor at UWE Bristol, said: “Our top priority is the health, safety and wellbeing of our entire university community and we are providing our full support to the student affected.

“The university has been working hard in recent weeks and months to create Covid-secure campuses that put the safety of our students and staff at the heart of everything we do.

“We are also ensuring that new and returning students have all the latest information they need to protect themselves and those around them.”

UWE has more than 30,000 students and 3,000 staff, and is one of the largest providers of higher education in the South West.

UWE has four campuses - Glenside nursing college, The Arnolfini, Frenchay and the Art College at Long Ashton.
