University of Tokyo President Teruo Fujii said the university will emphasize diversity, including increasing the percentage of female students, over the next six years.
Women enrolled in first-year courses this spring accounted for a record 21.2% of the university's freshman class. However, Fujii expressed his intention to implement measures to promote diversity, saying: "It's still not enough. We're considering concrete steps to increase the percentage further."
Fujii spoke on Monday, at his first press conference since taking office in April.
The university's students continue to study primarily online amid the coronavirus pandemic. "Even if you have few face-to-face activities," Fujii urged them, "devise ways to get more out of them."
Fujii did not attend the university's entrance ceremony in April, as he had become infected with the coronavirus.
At the press conference on Monday, he said: "You don't know where you could get infected, so it's important to proactively get tested, even when you feel just a little sick."
