A man stopped a police officer in Greater Manchester on Monday to alert them to the location of a murder victim.

He gave a community support officer an address in University of Salford student accommodation at Bramall Court in Cannon Street, where officers found the body of a 30-year-old man just after 1pm on Monday, Greater Manchester police (GMP) said. He appeared to have suffered stab wounds.

Following police inquiries, a 36-year-old was later arrested on suspicion of murder and on Tuesday was in police custody for questioning.

Supt Mark Kenny, based at Swinton in Salford, said: “This is a tragic incident in which a young man has lost his life and we are doing everything we can to find out exactly what happened.

“We have now launched a murder investigation and a team of detectives will be speaking to witnesses over the coming hours and days. As part of that I want to appeal to anyone who might have information that could help us – please come forward and speak to my officers.

“I can’t speculate on the motive for this crime, but at this early stage there is nothing to suggest there is a threat to the wider student population.

“We already have a strong working relationship with the university and we will be working closely with them in the coming days.”

A postmortem will take place later on Tuesday to establish the cause of death and specially trained officers are currently with the man’s family. He has not yet been formally identified.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 or the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
