University of Nottingham staff member collapses during graduation ceremony

A university graduation ceremony halted after a member of staff collapsed. On the morning of Monday, August 1, The University of Nottingham was holding its graduation ceremony for students from the School of Health and Science.

A member of staff who was reading the names of graduating students suddenly collapsed part way through the ceremony. One of the students graduating who witnessed the event said: "We were probably about a third of the way through and the woman that was reading the names out collapsed and we all thought she fainted.

"We just thought she fainted and were waiting for her to get up and carry on or whatever was going to happen. I hope she's alright. We were all told to leave so they could do CPR."

The ceremony resumed in the early afternoon. Vice-chancellor of the University of Nottingham Shearer West thanked everyone for exiting the ceremony calmly.

"Thanks to the swift action of our staff and our students, our colleague has been taken to hospital and is responding very well to care," said the Vice-chancellor. "We will be thinking of her and wishing her a speedy recovery, but I know that the very last thing she would want is for this to take focus away from your special day, so let's resume the ceremony and celebrate your achievements."
