University of Nottingham confirms more than 1,500 students have Covid-19

There are currently more than 1,500 'active cases' of Covid-19 within University of Nottingham.

In the latest figures published to the university's website, 1,510 students are reported to have tested positive for Covid-19 and are in currently in self-isolation.

A further 20 members of staff have been affected.

The "active confirmed cases" were recorded in the week ending October 9, 2020.

The highest proportion of cases were recorded for students in private accommodation, of which there are 677 affected.

In University halls, there are 523 cases while in purpose-built student accommodation there are 310 cases.

University of Nottingham has a total student population of 35,000 and a staff population of 10,000.

In its last update on active cases, when more than 400 students were confirmed to have the virus during the week ending October 2, a spokesperson said cases will be high because "the University is also running its own asymptomatic testing programme which identifies cases earlier and more quickly".

Two NHS walk-in testing stations are also based on University Park Campus and Jubilee Campus.

It comes as the Government is set to be announcing more restrictions for parts of the country, likely to include Nottingham and Nottinghamshire.

On October 11, there were 589 new cases of coronavirus recorded across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire from the previous day.

Of that total, 353 positive tests were recorded in the city of Nottingham.
