University of Newcastle student recognised for contribution to campus life

Well done: Shuang Zhang's award citation described her as a "multicultural champion on campus", who is dedicated to helping others.

THE UNIVERSITY of Newcastle's Shuang Zhang has been named as one of four NSW International Student of the Year award recipients.

Ms Zhang, who is from China and completing a PhD in Construction Management (Building), won the English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas Students (ELICOS) category. The prize includes a trip to Jervis Bay.

"I'm happy, excited, surprised and I cannot believe it," she said.

ELICOS courses enable international students to develop their English skills. Ms Zhang visited UON as an exchange student in 2018 and returned in September 2019.

She completed her ELICOS course before starting the first of three years of her doctorate this year.

She volunteers at several UON events, including many that benefit ELICOS students.

"I want to set a good example to other students, even if your English is not so good or perfect you can also enjoy the activities here and make good friends."

Ms Zhang has organised for Chinese alumni to share their industry experience with students and facilitated lantern-making workshops.

She is in the Australia-China Youth Association and will serve on the University of Newcastle Students' Association International Students' Senate next year.

Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Mark Hoffman, said the pandemic had presented challenges for international students.

"This year has seen extraordinary generosity, kindness and leadership among our students.

"I congratulate Shuang on this highly deserved award and thank her for the many contributions she makes to supporting her fellow students, making their experience of university a memorable experience."
