THE University of Newcastle (UON) will tell staff in coming days how it plans to make savings in the wake of COVID-19.
A university spokesperson said the UON Council met on Friday and "the Vice Chancellor will be letting staff know the outcomes this week".
National Tertiary Education Union Newcastle branch president Dan Conway said the union knew from university reporting, the NSW Auditor General report and independent research that the university "is in a strong short and longer-term position to meet the impacts of COVID 19".
"Nevertheless, we acknowledge there is a shortfall in 2020 and will look at any proposals on their merits; having regard to the demonstrated proportionality of what might be proposed," he said.
"Having said that, any concessions on pay and conditions will require commitments from management that secure the employment of all University staff, including casuals." Mr Conway wrote to councillors saying there is no need to change staff numbers or conditions.
