University of Manchester students occupy building in fresh protest over rent and tuition fees

University of Manchester students have occupied a building in a fresh protest over rent and tuition fees.

The group of around a dozen students have barricaded themselves into the Samuel Alexander building on Oxford Road and say they won't leave until their demands are met.

Banners are hanging from the building with slogans such as ''This is an occupied building, students welcome' and and 'We're waiting Nancy' (a reference to Vice-Chancellor Nancy Rothwell).

The group have issued a set of demands which include; a rent rebate of 30 per cent for semester 2 for all students in halls, the introduction of elections for university leadership and a cash rebate to all students of £1,500.

When the M.E.N visited the scene on Sunday students supporters were sending up supplies via a rope system.

The occupation comes after a similar protest in Fallowfield last term which resulted in a 30 per cent rent rebate for students in halls.

The government recently confirmed that face-to-face teaching will not be able to resume at universities until 17 May at the earliest.

Only students on practical courses were advised to return to university although around half are thought to have chosen to return.

Millions of students across the country say they feel 'cheated' by their experience at university this year and have called on the government to force through refunds for rent and tuition fees.

The M.E.N reported last week how the government's decision not to prioritise university education as restrictions are eased has left many students in Manchester feeling 'forgotten'.

It follows a chaotic term at the University of Manchester where the leadership has faced repeated criticism over incidents including fencing being put up around halls and a student alleging he was racially profiled by security staff.

In March, students passed a historic vote for a change in leadership and called on Vice-Chancellor Nancy Rothwell to resign.

The vote was non-binding a statement from the board of governors said the leadership team had faced 'difficult choices and decisions' but that they can 'lead the university forward'.

Responding to the occupation at the Samuel Alexander building this week, a spokesperson for the University of Manchester told The Tab: "A small number of students are currently occupying an area in one of our buildings without permission.

"Staff are on site to ensure safety and welfare. We would ask that the students leave. We understand that some of our students have concerns and we are continuing to work closely with their elected representatives."
