Huge hole opens up in Oxford Road as flooding causes chaos in Manchester

A huge hole has opened up on one of Manchester's main roads after a burst water pipe caused serious flooding.

A water main burst near the University of Manchester's campus on Oxford Road at around 5am.

Emergency services have been working at the scene throughout the day and road closures remain in place.

The main area affected by the flooding is near the University of Manchester Oxford Road campus, where dozens of freshers week events are set to be held over the coming days for new students.

According to the latest update from United Utilities, water supply has been restored in the area but work is still ongoing to remove flood water.

"Our team will be busy working throughout the course of the day to complete the repairs on Oxford Road. All customers should now have supply, however you may notice some fluctuation in your water pressure until we finish the work.

"Please be assured we are working as quickly as we can, and we’re sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.

"Thank you again for your patience, we will continue to keep you updated as we progress with the repair."

Photos show a huge hole has since opened up in the road.

Several of the university buildings have been closed off today, with police cordons in place around the campus.

The M.E.N understands that some of the buildings have been flooded, though this has not yet been confirmed.

The main library is closed, as well as the Students' Union and Academy.

The John Owens Building, Alan Gilbert Learning Commons, The Samuel Alexander Building, Student Services Centre, Stephen Joseph Studio, Mansfield Cooper Building and Whitworth Hall are also closed.

Students are being asked to avoid these buildings and the surrounding areas.

Several welcome events for new students have had to be cancelled, moved or postponed.

The Societies and Sports taking place today has been moved from the Manchester Academy to the Armitage Sports Centre.

Campus tours have been cancelled, as well as an introduction to the library.

A student fair in Fallowfield is going ahead as normal.

In a statement posted online earlier, a spokesperson for GMFRS said: "Around 6am this morning we were called to reports of flooding on Oxford Road, Manchester. The flooding is caused by a burst water main and is creating substantial disruption to the local area.

"Oxford Road is closed between Booth St and Grafton St and six fire engines and a Command Unit are in attendance.

"United Utilities are at the scene alongside Greater Manchester Police, Manchester City Council and representatives of the University of Manchester.

"There is currently no impact on access to the hospitals nearby.

"Shortly before 0900 this morning United Utilities have successfully isolated the burst pipe.

"Several buildings have been flooded and firefighters are working hard to minimise damage and remove flood water."
