University of Leeds moves classes online due to coronavirus outbreak

The University of Leeds is cancelling face-to-face lectures and plans to make "a significant transition to online learning" over the next two weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak.

The university says all classes of over 300 students will be cancelled from Monday, March 16 and all classes of over 200 students will be cancelled the following day, but they will be running live online classes and sharing learning material online.

It also plans to cancel all classes of over 100 students from Monday, March 23 and deliver all classes online from Monday, April 27, when students are due to return from a four-week Easter break.

In a statement, the university said: "Our current assessment is that lectures and classes with fewer than 100 students can continue to be delivered in a face-to-face mode, in a way which is consistent with appropriate social distancing; but we will review that question early next week.

"This is a significant change to make quickly, and we would ask you, please, to bear with us if there are a few glitches.

"Progress will be monitored closely and of course the university stands ready to take further measures to protect the health and wellbeing of students and staff if this proves necessary."

There are now 1,391 confirmed cases of the flu-like virus in the UK, including 19 in Leeds, and 35 people have died.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says Europe is now the "epicentre" of the pandemic and a number of countries, including Italy, Denmark and Czech Republic have enforced border closures.

Public Health England states: "The most common symptoms of coronavirus (COVID-19) are recent onset of a new continuous cough and/or high temperature.

"If you have these symptoms, however mild, stay at home and do not leave your house for seven days from when your symptoms started. You do not need to call NHS 111 to go into self-isolation.

"If your symptoms worsen during home isolation or are no better after 7 days, contact NHS 111."
