University of Glasgow becomes first Scottish university to declare a climate emergency

The University of Glasgow has today become the first university in Scotland to declare a climate emergency.

The west end institution joins a growing number of voices - from organisations to government - calling for greater action on climate change.

Last week, Extension Rebellion, the group protesting most publicly for greater efforts to tackle climate change, even staged a “die-in” around Dippy at the Kelvingrove Museum .

David Duncan, Chief Operating Officer and co-chair of the University’s Sustainability Working Group said the university was taking a stand - pointing to their plans to divest from fossil fuels.

He said: “In taking this stand we are affirming our belief that urgent action is needed to tackle climate change.

“Glasgow was the first university to confirm that we were divesting from fossil fuels and we have followed this up with additional actions to reduce our carbon footprint and address other issues, such as waste, biodiversity and sustainable travel.”

The President of Glasgow University Student Representative Council, Lauren McDougall, said that climate change was an issue which students at the uni felt passionate about.

She added: “Students at the University of Glasgow feel passionately about the issue of climate change and want their institution to play a lead role in tackling it.  We have urged the University to take a clear and unambiguous stand.

"The SRC strongly supports the decision to declare a climate emergency and will be actively involved in implementing the actions defined by the EAUC.”
