University of Bristol issue statement on suspected Coronavirus case

The University of Bristol has issued a statement on the student who was taken to hospital over fears that they had developed Coronavirus.

As of today (January 31) two suspected cases of Coronavirus have so far been confirmed in the UK. The Department of Health have declined to comment on where in England the two patients are from.

However, the University of Bristol can now confirm the student who was taken to hospital yesterday (January 30) has now been discharged from hospital after experiencing 'flu like symptoms.'

The student is not one of the two UK cases who have been confirmed to have Coronavirus.

What is Coronavirus?

In a statement issued to Bristol Live, a spokesperson from the University of Bristol said: “We can confirm that the student taken to hospital last night has now been discharged and there was no diagnosis of Coronavirus.

"We are continuing to support the student, and remind staff and students of the advice from Public Health England.”

Latest from Public Health England

Chief Medical Officer for England, Professor Chris Whitty had confirmed that two patients in England have now tested positive for coronavirus.

The University of Bristol has said that the student taken to hospital yesterday has now been discharged from hospital and is not one of the two suspected cases in the UK.

The UK Chief Medical Officers have now raised the risk to the UK public from low to moderate as a result of the confirmation of two positive coronavirus cases in the UK.

This permits the government to plan for all eventualities and the risk to individuals in the UK has not yet changed at this stage.
