University of Bristol coronavirus cases surge to more than 1,600

The number of positive coronavirus tests at the University of Bristol has surged to more than 1,600, according to the latest figures.

A total of 1,574 students have tested positive for covid-19 at the University of Bristol now, together with 39 members of staff, taking the total of confirmed cases at the university to 1,613 after a daily rise of 46 cases.

The rise comes a day after the University confirmed its biggest rise to date, with cases rising by 241 in 24 hours - but this was because of a readjustment of some figures from previous days.

The University of Bristol has been dealing with a coronavirus outbreak since the beginning of October and, on Friday, we were able to reveal how coronavirus cases have soared by 870 per cent at Bristol University in just 16 days.

In recent days, the number of new positive tests among students seemed to have slowed down and the University hadn't confirmed more than a hundred positive tests among its students since Wednesday, October 14, when 126 cases were confirmed.

The biggest rise last week was recorded on Tuesday (October 20), when 83 students tested positive - while Monday saw the smallest rise with 25.

Coronavirus cases are also rising quickly at the University of the West of England, where cases have gone up by more than 500 per cent in just over a week.

At present, UWE doesn't publish overall figures for coronavirus positive tests but has confirmed 243 cases in the last seven days, with 35 cases being recorded on Tuesday (October 27).
